Delphinium elatum 'Guardian Blue' is available from Monrovia. This popular genus of the Ranunculaceae includes over 300 species of annual and perennial herbs. The species elatum, native to Europe east to Siberia came into cultivation around 1578. It was immediately surrounded by confused nomenclature, but was most synonymous with D. alpinum and D. intermedium. This may be due to the amateur crossing with D. cheilanthum of Siberia and D. bruninianum from the Himalayas and D. formosum from Armenia, from which descended today's garden hybrids. Later breeding was led by Kelway and Lemoine followed by others throughout northern Europe. The Guardian Series delphiniums were developed by Ball Horticulture and Pan American Seed.
