Magnolias need an organic, humusy, acidic soil that is evenly moist yet well drained. They need full sun and protection from winter wind. There are many different kinds of magnolias. The evergreen magnolia or southern magnolia is Magnolia grandiflora. Only a few varieties of this one will be winter hardy in your area (your zip code places you in zone 6) such as Edith Bogue or Alta or Brackens Brown Beauty. The deciduous magnolias including Magnolia stellata, M. soulangiana and hybrids are more reliably winter hardy in your area and include many choices. The mature size will depend on which specific variety you plant. There are many described in the online plant listings at the Monrovia web site. You may also find the information at the following web site helpful in terms of care and siting information; I am providing a few direct links but you can check their alphabetically for additional cultivars. You may need to cut and paste the complete url into your browser to make it work correctly.

Your local professional nursery staff should also be able to help you select a suitable tree. Enjoy your magnolia!
