|I would like to plan a vertical columnar plant like a dwarf alberta spruce. my location is near an ash and birch tree where it will be shaded on the north east side. it will have south facing sun for two to four hours a day. Is that enough and will it be dense on one side and sparse leafed on the other?
|Two to four hours of sunlight isn't enough for an Alberta Spruce. It won't grow well and you'll be disappointed in its appearance. A better choice for the site would be Cupressus sempervirens 'Glauca' (Blue Italian Cypress). This tree is a columnar evergreen, 25'high by X 4' wide. It has blue-green foliage.
Best wishes with your landscape!
