Spruces are very cold tolerant trees and prefer a climate with cold winters and cool summers; the Washington, DC area is about the southern edge of their range where they can stay healthy during the summers -- and Cary is even hotter and even more humid over an even longer summer season. Your local professional nursery staff and/or county extension should be able to help you identify plants that will thrive in your new locale.
