If I place block mesh/plastic over the top of where I planted bulbs & then put mulch over the mesh, will my flowers be able to come thru the mesh or would I have to cut holes for them to come thru? |
In my experience you have to use a wire mesh because the rodents will chew through plastic. I have found that you need to use a fairly small mesh or they will dig in between the wires. Old window screens work well, or hardware cloth. Chicken wire is not small enough. I have also found you need to remove it in the spring just as the bulbs come up. Otherwise the stems and foliage become deformed. (By the time you cut a hole large enough for the growth, the bulb could be pulled out through the hole. This is also a lot of work!)In most cases the animals try to dig the freshly planted bulbs but will leave them alone by spring so it is safe to remove the wire. That way you can also save it to use again the next time you plant bulbs. Good luck! |
