I have planted Jocobien lilies for several years now. The first two or three they were beautiful, red and looked like lovely orchids. Now the plants looks nice and healthy and the bulbs are big and always multiply but never bloom. Can you give me some idea what could be wrong? I dug them in the fall and replant in the spring. zone 4. Thank you, Ruby

I suspect your Aztec Lilies may be slightly off schedule if you have been planting them in the garden rather than growing them as container plants. Usually they are potted in late winter for flowers in summer as the new leaves develop, so it may simply be they have been shortchanged on the length of their growing season and it has caught up to them. Try to keep the bulbs growing vigorously as long as possible until they begin to yellow in the fall, at which point they should be dried off and kept cool (say about 45 to 50 degrees) until late winter when you would start them growing again. (In a cold climate such as yours it is better to grow them as container plants much as one would handle amaryllis.) Make sure they are in full sun and use a complete fertilizer such as 10-10-10 plus minors per the label instructions. Good luck with them -- they are lovely!
