|How and when do I prune the Sweet Shrub?|
|Your Sweet Shrub (Calycanthus floridus) produces flowers on new wood so you'll want to prune in early spring, just as new growth begins. As with all flowering shrubs, you can safely remove up to one third of the plant without harming it. If your Sweet Shrub has really become overgrown, you can prune it back over a period of three years: first cut it back by one third; the following year remove half of the oldest stems by cutting down to ground level; the third year, remove the remaining old wood. Pruning in this way will completely renovate the plant.
Best wishes with your landscape!
