|I planted in medium-sized vases, seven of your Japanese Wisteria (Violacea Plena)produced in Cairo GA, along with six Amethyst Falls Wisteria from Home Depot; and planted in the ground, an equal number of Evergreen Wisteria (Millettia reticulata) also from Home Depot.
I have all plants on an automatic watering system @ twice each week over the summer, and each of the pots is well drained. All are supported by a large Pergola and receive a good deal of filtered sun daily.
100% of the potted Wisteria did VERY poorly during the summer, plus were hit very hard by caterpillars this fall. Currently, only 8-10
|Based on your comments the only thing that comes to mind is that the wisteria must not be happy with the soil volume in the medium sized containers. It is difficult to determine whether or not the soil is staying adequately moist but you can dig down a few inches and feel the soil to get an idea if the watering schedule is right or not. If you must keep them potted for location reasons, I suggest larger containers that are not terra cotta or concrete unless you seal the outsides to reduce water loss from evaporative wicking of the moisture by the porous containers themselves.
