Bulb lilies (Lilium) are left standing until frost kills back the foliage and stem. At that time you can trim away the stem by cutting at ground level, or it may come away with a very gentle tug. During the growing season it is a good idea to deadhead as the blooms fade. Remove the whole flower, including the bulge at the base to prevent seed formation. This helps direct the plant's energy to rebuilding the bulb so it will bloom well the following year.
