|I have three blueberry bushes next to the house and I'd like to know if I need to wrap them for the winter. I'm not sure when the bushes were planted, they're about 6 1/2 ft tall and have been here at least four years. It's been 23-38* at night for the past two weeks and 40-55* during the day. The bushes are in a sunny spot, one is protectedf from the wind by the side of the house the other two are exposed to wind.
|Blueberry bushes' cold tolerance (many to about -20 F) depends on the specific variety you are growing. The hardier sorts should not need wrapping or other special protective measures in zone 6A which is where your zip code places you. But if they are in a windy spot you could provide some wind protection with burlap just as insurance. (Your neighbors may also remember if they were routinely wrapped, or not.) You should also make sure they are mulched, use an organic mulch several inches deep over the root area and keep it a few inches away from the stem or trunk. Your local county extension should be able to help you develop a care and maintenance plan for your bushes. In the meantime, you may find the following helpful.
