|What is the diference between grasses that turn brown in the winter and grasses that stay green year round? Thnaks, JZD|
Grasses can be divided into two groups, warm season and cool season. Warm season grasses turn brown in winter. These include St. Augustine, bermudagrass, zoysia and centipede. Cool season grasses stay green in winter but usually struggle through the long hot summers in our southern climate and as such are generally not well adapted in zone 8 and below. These include fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. Ryegrass is another cool season grass often overseeded into a warm season turf and grown as a cool season annual to maintain green color in the landscape all through the winter season.
