This year I received a Bird of Paradise as a gift. I have many other plants in pots (i.e. hybiscus, begonias, impatients, bleeding heart, among others) that I cut back, within 2-4 inches of the dirt when it gets near freezing and place in my storage room. I water them and they do get sun through the window. They all come back each spring. Do I want to do this with my Bird of Paradise? Thanks! |
You'll want to protect your Bird of Paradise from freezing weather, and moving it into a storage room overnight, or even for 2-3 days won't hurt it, but don't cut it down so severely or it will spend all of its energy producing new foliage - at the expense of flowers. Cut away any dead leaves and cut the flowering stalks down to foliage level when the flowers are spent, but don't cut the entire plant down if you want to see the gorgeous flowers! |
