I am especially interested in starting Shooting Stars (Dodecatheon). What are the ideal germinating and growing conditions for Shooting Stars? |
Dodecatheon like humus-rich, slightly acid soil. They'll grow in full sun or partial shade. They need lots of moisture during bloom and none afterward when they go dormant. You can hide the dormant plants by spreading organic mulch over them. They are tough to start from seeds as many of the seedlings do not survive their first year. Root division is an easy and successful way to propagate the plants. If you want to start them from seeds, sow the seeds directly in the garden in the fall. |
