My Butterfly Bush is about 3 1/2 Feet Tall. I cut it down to the ground last Winter and it grew beautifully this past season and bushier. Is it necessary to cut it down each season or can I let it remain as is? I mound the dirt at the base for wintering as directed.

Butterfly Bush, also known as Buddleia davidii, blooms on new growth. Therefore, stems should be pruned back in early spring to encourage large, lush flower spikes. You can let it grow into a shrub form, (which could eventually be about 12'x15') but your flower "show" won't be as spectacular. FYI, I always prune back my Butterfly Bush on St. Patrick's Day to about 6-10" . P.S. Keep up the mounding, wouldn't want to lose such a great plant!
