| I agree, snails can be a problem, but I wouldn't try to get rid of the beetles in your garden area. Beetles are generally beneficial and not all of them feed on plants. Ground beetles are especially good to have in the garden and they actually feed on slug and snail eggs. I'd go ahead and plant the garden, then set traps for the pesky snails or use a slug and snail bait. There's a new product on the market that contains iron that's useful against slugs and snails and it is harmless to people, pets, and beneficial insects. As for planning, you'll want to assess the area and determine what kind of sunlight exposure each area gets. Shade loving plants should go in dark areas, sun lovers in the brightest spots. Each plant at the nursery should have a tag explaining its preference to sunlight exposure. Putting the right plant in the right place will help ensure success with your new garden.
