When is the best time to prune Mugho pines and how much can you prune?

Mugho pines may be pruned in the spring when the new shoots, which look like candles, develop. When the "candle" has extended almost to its full length, but before the needles are fully developed, remove about half the length of the "candle". This will promote compactness of the plant.
