|I would like to purchase an olive tree for my yard, and I am overwhelmed and cannot seem to find the right one. I have a small cottage and a spot that's about 15'x15' in the middle of a looping sidewalk that I'd like to put it. I don't want a shrub or 'patio' tree, I want a full tree, nothing that is topiary cut or shrub like, but not something that will completely overwhelm my house, and not something so small that it has no presence.
So... in your infinite wisdom, can you recommend an olive tree that is:
**non (or low) fruiting
**something that will be 15-20 feet at maturity (or that can be kept at that height by pruning and look natural)
**for a front yard of a small tuscan cottage?
|The Majestic Beauty Fruitless Olive tree will have a mature size of about 25' tall and wide. It sounds as though it might be a little too large for your yard. The roots of olive trees can be invasive and I would be concerned about them lifting the sidewalk as the tree matures. You can avoid that by planting in a large container rather than planting directly in the ground. An added benefit to this is that the roots would be confined which would keep the tree slightly smaller in height and width. With those considerations in mind, Majestic Beauty would certainly add to your Mediterranean theme.|
