I have planted a series of jasmine vines against a chain-link fence. I'm interested in also planting Boston or English ivy as an additional "filler" to hide the fence. Will the vine and ivy contend with one another and choke one or the other out? |
The competition for water and nutrients will put your jasmine in a precarious position. The jasmine will eventually become dense enough to hide the fence. Ivy will cover the fence at a more rapid pace, but will not provide flowers as the jasmine will. Since the jasmine is already planted, why not encourage it to grow rather than put it in a race with ivy? (The ivy will win!) Pinch the jasmine back throughout the spring and summer months and it will become bushy in a few years. |
