Photosynthesis is the process in which light energy is used to form foods from carbon dioxide and water. Chlorophyll molecules (the green part of the leaf) trap energy from light and use the energy to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide to make glucose and other sugars. These sugars are the primary ingredients from which plants make proteins, oils, vitamins, pigments, and other compounds.
