bougainvillea, barbara kurst - Knowledgebase Question

We just bought a barbara kurst bougainvillea from Home Depot yesterday. We planted it in the ground. Today I was reading up on this plant and am concerned I shouldn't have put in ground. We live in Houston, TX 77099 and our zone does get some freezes. If it freezes or get below 40 degrees will the plant die? How can I protest it? Should I just take it out of the ground and replant in the pot? Thank you for your help. Dena Cooper

Most folks in your area grow it in a large outdoor pot. You can leave it in the ground if you like and then dig, prune back and repot it in October before the first frost arrives. Or, you could repot it now. Use a large container at least about 5 gallons in size, and bigger is better.

Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
