|I have been told by my grandmother and others that it is necessary to put a layer of gravel or small stones on the bottom of pots before planting houseplants in them. Other people tell me that if I buy a pot with good drainage I don't need to add gravel. Is either of these methods better than the other? Thanks!
|At one time it was customary to place a layer of gravel in the bottom of a container before adding potting soil and the plant. This was to compensate for no, or few drainage holes. Containers manufactured now have adequate drainage holes so there's no need to add gravel.
