What Shrubs are ok to plant in an area that never gets any sun at all?

I find that trees and shrubs with variegated foliage help brighten a shady planting areas. As long as there's a reasonable amount of light (you can cast a shadow with your hand), you can plant Abutilion (flowering maple), Leucothoe, Pieris, or Aucuba japonica (Japanese aucuba). Abutilion, Aucuba and Leucothoe all have variegated foliage; Pieris has red-tinged young foliage which turns green with age. Hope one of these suggestions appeals to you!
