Floral Park, NY
|I planted Alberta Spruces and now they have no branches at the bottom of the trunk. I've had problems with vines growing into the trees. Could these vines be slowing the growth of branches?

|The normal habit of spruces is to grow in a pyramidal or cone shape, with nicely spaced branches from bottom to top. It's quite possible that the invasive vines either starved out the buds for newly forming branches, or the weight of the vines broke the branches off the trunk. I'd clear the area of the vines and then begin pinching out the tips of the branches of the spruces to encourage more dense growth. In a few years you won't notice the missing branches.
