I have recently purchased a Perovskia atriplicifolia from Monrovia in a one gallon pot that already has new growth. I want to plant it but we are anticipating a few nights in the next week that will be in the high 20's (Fahrenheit) but the day time temps are in the 60's and the soil temp at 2 and 6 inches is in the mid-40's. This is a normal temperature range for mid-March in our area. This plant is known to be extremely tough and has a cold tolerance to -20 F. If I protect the plant at night will it be safe to plant it now?

Matt,

You could keep it in the pot and move to a protected location on such nights until the danger of freeze is past. You can also plant it and then cover it on such nights. That plant is very cold hardy but my concern is that it would have been in a greenhouse or other temperate growing conditions and not be ready for a sudden hard freeze. Protecting it will keep the new growth safe and be a head start for the plant.
