I would like to have beautiful tall hedges (like boxwood) to grow to 10 ft. or so. Is it possible in the Midwest? Do yew hedges grow in the midwest.

Yews will grow in Chicago, especially when given some afternoon shade. If you have a completely sunny site, you might consider one of the following juniper suggestions:
Juniperus chinensis ?Fairview? ? Bright green, narrow pyramidal growing to 15 feet; silver cones look like berries in fall. Good vigorous grower.

J. chinensis ?Iowa? ? Blue-green, open pyramidal growing to 15 feet; spread to 8 feet.

J. chinensis ?Mint Julep? ? Bright mint-green, compact 5 feet by 5 feet habit with arching branch tips.

Hope one of these suggestions piques your interest!
