Northfacing bed next to pool - Knowledgebase Question

point Lookout, ny

I need to replace the plantings next to the pool due to snow damage and age. The Lebanon cedars were tall and provided a screen and good height. What evergreen can I plant that I can get height and interest without doing the ubiquitous arborvitae screen?
Thanks

You might like hollies such as Cardinal, one of the newer group of red hollies, or possibly if your site is in an especially sheltered microclimate, Nellie R. Stevens (Ilex x 'Nellie R. Stevens') or perhaps you would like yews left to grow without shearing. Your local professionally trained and certified nurseryman should be able to help you evaluate the growing conditions and identify plants that would thrive there and also meet your design goals. They may have additional or different suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of the situation. Good luck with your new screen!
