Your kumquat was grafted onto Carrizo Citrange rootstock. It is important to prune away any growth emerging from below the graft so it won't overtake the kumquat. It sometimes happens that the Carrizo rootstock can eventually overgrow the graft, producing a deep crease at the graft union that eventually girdles and kills the tree (but not the rootstock).
