|Since a young boy I have been eating a food called Johnny Bread. It is a bean type of food, average length of 6", dark brown, dried and sweet taste. I am unable to find out, using the Internet, where this food is grown, is it a fruit grown on a tree or bush, a vegetable like a bean on a plant? I can buy it locally in a produce yard from a grocer who himself does not know the resource. Do you have any ideas? Johnny bread is the name used by the grocer for 50 years and yet the Internet only has bread recipes-not containing the "bean".|
Thanks in advance! I look forward to your reply. Burpee customer for years.
|There is something similar we eat "round these parts" called Leather Britches. Could these be the same? Leather Britches sound exactly like what you are describing above. All they are is a half runner green bean or a KY Wonder green bean whichhas been air dried for several weeks. After the drying process the green bean turns dark brown and takes on a whole new sweet taste. If you think this may be what you are looking for post another question via the website and I can tell you how to make them at home.|
