I love the kwanzan cherry trees. Can this tree be used for shade on a small patio? I was thinking of using them on the east and west side of my patio. This site is wonderful - so full of information!!! It is the first place I go to for info. Thanksssssssss

The Kwanzan cherry should do well in your area. It is actually a rather large tree at maturity, so just one might be sufficient. Prunus serrulata 'Kwanzan' (P. serrula interstem) grows to about 20 to 25 feet high and usually over 20 feet across. If you plant it to the southwest corner you will have shade at late morning, noontime and early to mid afternoon once it has a few years of growth. If this sounds too large, you might look at some of the smaller varieties of crabapple. There are many newer varieties with excellent disease resistance and all season interest. Your local professional nursery staff should be able to help you determine which tree(s) would be most appropriate for the planting conditions and the space available by your patio. Enjoy your new tree(s)!
