Hens and Chicks or Sempervivum need a well drained soil. If you are planting them in the garden they will do best in a sunny spot on a slight slope; do not put them in a low spot or a wet spot. If you have heavy clay based soil, you could add a little coarse builders sand or fine grit and some organic matter such as compost or old rotted leaves or milled spagnum peat moss to help keep the soil aerated. In a container outdoors, use a good quality soilless mix formulated for container plants. If you are trying them as a houseplant, make sure you do not overwater them and give them as much sunlight as possible. As a houseplant you could use either the soilless mix for container plants or a mix formulated for cactus. Enjoy your hens and chicks!
