Monrovia rates its Hong Kong orchid tree for USDA zones 9-11, so zone 8 is considered too cold. USDA zone 9 has average annual minimum temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees F. Deming's zone 8 has average annual minimum temperatures of 10 to 20 degrees F. You might want to keep a daily log of minimum temperatures in your yard, perhaps in a protected area or next to a south or west wall. If you are lucky and have a protected microclimate with higher temperatures, you might try the tree if you are so inclined. However, if there's an unusually cold winter, or you tracked temperatures during an unusually warm winter...the tree may not survive. Good luck on your move!
