I have a shady/sun-dappled flower bed with privets in the back and liriope in the front. I would like to plant astilbe in the middle. Your website says that astilbe will thrive in zone 9, but I am concerned that none of the Houston nurseries carry it. Will it be ok in my flower bed? Are there particular varieties of astilbe that will do better than others? Can I order it online?

Thanks

Molly,

Astilbe is very marginal at best in your zone due to the long, hot, sultry summers. I suggest you consider another plant for that area. Some possible choices include Persian Shield, various types of ginger (variegated ginger would be great), or perhaps pentas (an annual flower).
