I purchased a butterfly bush last year,,I cut it down in early spring (Mid March), when will it start to come back? I guess I'm just worried, I have never had one before and want to make sure I have done everything correctly. Thank you. |
You have done what you can, so all that is left to do is wait and see. I should mention that based on your zip code you are located in zone 5A, the coldest part of zone 5. Depending on your microclimate, it may be as cold as zone 4. This plant is considered hardy into zone 5, but your area would be the coldest part of the range where it might survive. It would need to have some shelter from winter winds, be well mulched, and be planted in very well drained soil to be reliably winter hardy for you. Sometimes in a severe winter these can be killed back almost to the ground and can be slow to come into growth in the spring. Usually it is a good idea to wait until you see growth before you cut it back. Then trim it back until you reach live wood. I hope it comes through for you! |
