| Three years ago I planted two Cardinal Red Hollies. They are in full sun most of the day. They have not grown at all and this past winter they looked as if they were dying. They barely have any foliage left on them. Then to my surprise they actually got some new growth this past week and it's the first new growth ever on these plants. Could you please give me some ideas as to what could be wrong with them? Also, will it kill them if I transplant them? They are 3 1/2 feet tall. Thank you for your time, Lynne Friday |
| New growth is a good sign. It sounds as though our hollies took their time in becoming established. It might be that the planting site just doesn't suit them at all. Moving them shouldn't hurt them, especially if their new homes have well draining soil. I'd move them now, before the weather gets hot. Dig the new holes first, then dig your hollies up and move them quickly so their roots don't have a chance to dry out. Plant them at the same soil level as they were growing before and be sure to water them in well after planting to help settle the soil. To ensure they establish quickly, water them deeply once each week during the growing season. Best wishes with your hollies. |
