|Which bulbs grow the best under evergreens? Also can hostas grow under evergreens?|
|Most bulbs need direct sun for at least half the day and preferably all day in order to grow and bloom their best. If the evergreens are limbed up so that light reaches the ground beneath them, you might try daffodils and see how they do for you.
Hostas do well in morning sun or dappled light all day or in heavy shade (avoid afternoon sun) and can be grown beneath evergreens as long as the soil is not bone dry; you may find that the roots steal moisture and a dense canopy blocks rain from reaching the ground as well. Another shade loving plant to try might be epimedium which will tolerate dry shade once established. It is a relatively slow grower but a delightful plant.
Your local county extension and professionally trained nursery staff may have different suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of the planting site and your overall design goals. Good luck with your plantings!
