Can a climbing rose & a clematis be successful climbing up the same object, or will one inhibit or harm the other?

It can be done although you must take them both into account when you prune. You would also need to use a climbing rose that is fully hardy in your area so you do not have to take it down from the trellis for the winter. In your zone that would probably mean one of the Explorer Series roses, for example. Last but not least, make sure your support structure is strong enough to hold them both; fully grown plants can be very heavy in a wind storm especially if they are wet with rain or snow. You can make some really pretty combinations using roses and clematis.
