Cannas are usually dug in the fall once frost has killed back the tops. Dig them up carefully and discard any that are damaged, cut off the foliage and stems, rinse clean with a garden hose and allow to air dry for several days. (Protect from freezing.) Then pack in single layers in dry shavings or wrapped in newspaper inside a cardboard box or paper bag. Store in a dark place at a cool temperature of about 50 degrees. Check periodically to make sure there is no rotting (too cold) or shriveling (too dry). Remove any rotting rhizomes and move to a more suitable storage area. If you find they are drying, sprinkle or mist with a little water and store a bit cooler. I hope this helps.
