For morning sun, I have used impatiens with asparagus fern along with a bit of variegated English ivy, or perhaps a caladium or two. For hot afternoon sun I would suggest a sun coleus with bright foliage and possibly a calibrachoa in a color that picks up a bit of the sun coleus coloring. There are many different plants you could use! Your local professional nursery staff should be able to show you annuals that would thrive in the location you have in mind.
