Today I purchased a Hidcote St. John's Wort. How does this differ (if it does) from the St.John's Wort which is processed and packaged as an herbal medicine? Is it a different variety?

Thank you.

Hypericum perforatum is the common St. Johnswort, which is used as a medicinal herb; Hidcoat St. Johnswort is a hybrid between H. x cyathiflorum 'Gold Cup' and H. calycinum. The plants are related, but not exactly the same and probably do not have the same properties.
