I love maples and this is the only one I saw in zone 9 for full to partial sun. My front yard is full sun all day long. It would be planted in my front lawn (faces East). What are the chances of survival? Can it be pruned so that I can see through layers of branches rather than letting it grow really bushy? Thanks! |
The range of the Vine Maple extends from the southern part of British Columbia, south to the Sacramento River in California. It typically grows as a forest understory and therefore will grow quite well in the shade - or in partially shady areas. The natural growth habit is shrubby so while you can prune it, it will still grow into an informal and bushy tree. If you love the look and fall color of maples, an alternative might be Liquidambar. You'll get the same maple leaf look and traditional fall colors but this tree is pyramidal in shape with well spaced branches and it grows best in full sunshine. |
