|I had sent in a questions about plant recommendations for a dense screen, Zone 9, clay soil, sun/part shade and the Monrovia team recommended Green Tower Boxwood. I reviewed it's characteristics and it appears to be perfect for my situation.
I do have a couple of implementation questions for which I would appreciate your recommendations:
1. As I have dogs, I will need a fence. I would like to use an open/wire chain fence for cost purposes and to keep the look of the plant alone. Would it be OK to plant the base of the boxwoods next to an open wire/chain link fence? Will the boxwoods eventually cover/hide the chain or would it be better to use a wood fence and plant to one side?
2. What would be the ideal spacing to get the best, most complete coverage (no visibility through the hedge). Is 1 foot center to center too far? Should it be 6 inches center to center?
Thank you for your suggestions and recommendations.
|Green Tower Boxwoods grow only 2-3 feet wide at maturity so I would space them 24" apart so they will grow into a full, dense privacy screen. You can place them 30" apart but they will take a little longer to fill in; closer and they will be crowded when they mature. I'd vote for using the chainlink fence. The shrubs will benefit from the additional light and air circulation a chainlink provides. Be sure to plant the boxwoods at least 12" away from the fence to give them adequate growing room. Enjoy your new hedge!|
