I am moving from Kansas to Louisiana and I am taking 4 small rose bushes and several elephant ear corms (just starting to come out) with me. I have put them in containers with lots of soil and think they should be ok for the drive. I am going to a place where someone has planted different things such as roses and azaleas all over the yard and under pine trees. I would like to dig these up and arrange them in a more appealing way and bring in the new ones. Do you have any suggestions for this project? Gardening is a hobby of mine. I use it for therapy when my husband is gone on deployment (military family) or school.

Thanks so much!

Gardening is a great hobby and I do wish your husband and you well. Thank him for us for serving!

It is difficult to say how to arrange the plants you have as it comes down to what you like. Just keep in mind their sun requirements. Azaleas love bright shade. That's true for elephant ears too. Roses need full sun or close to it. Under pine tree is not the best place for a rose if it is to bloom its best. Mix several inches of compost into the planting area before digging the holes to plant. Use slightly raised beds if drainage is at all in question. Water the plants in well after planting. Those transplants from your old homesite will need a little extra careful watering and TLC to recover and establish in their new home. Contact your local County Extension Office for free gardening publications and advice on local conditions.
