There are several reasons you roses may be looking dry and brownish. All are related to the roots. Dry soil conditions are the most obvious reason. If your roses were just planted this past winter or spring they probably don't have enough of a root system to withstand the warm temperatures especially if you don't keep the soil moist. If the soil stays too wet for a period of time the lack of oxygen will cause roots to start to die and then drought symptoms follow on the top parts of the plant. Finally, if you sprayed them with a product such as an insecticide or soluble fertilizer product or put too much of a dry fertilizer around the base of the plant you can burn foliage or roots and cause similar symptoms.
