I am looking for suggestions for a flowering perennial to put next to our garage (south facing). I would like to find something that will grow to 5 feet tall by 3 feet wide (or so). It could be on a trellis as long as it does not attach to our garage (we had wisteria but hated that it marked our garage). Any ideas? thanks! |
Five feet is very tall for a herbaceous perennial, but some of the perennial hibiscus cultivars such as "Lord Baltimore" can grow to five feet tall and wide. JoePye Weed or Eupatorium purpureum is a native perennial that can reach five feet (or more). Another potentially tall grower would be a tall aster such as "Alma Potschke" or possibly Boltonia, these tend to be upright and relatively narrow but may require staking if grown against a wall. All of these require a rich, evenly moist soil to grow that large. Although they do not flower in the traditional sense, you might consider an ornamental grass for that location. Or, you might look at annual vines such as morning glory or moonflower or cardinal flower and allow it to grow on a trellis. These vines attach by twining so would not leave marks on the wall. I hope this gives you some ideas. |
