I bought one of your 5 gallon Smoke bush (Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple') last year. It is multi-stemmed or has a number of branches. When it leafed out this year, the leaves are present on on the tips of the branches. All the branches have leaves only on the first 4 or 5 inches of the branch, while the remaining branch remains leafless.
Last year when I bought it, it had leaves all the way on all the branches. Why are the leaves not growing on the branches all the way? The plant looks healthy and has leafed out about 2 months ago.
Is there something I can do?

The older branches are not going to produce leaves. As the new growth fills in an lots of new shoot growth occurs the plant will be fuller again. The first couple of years a new plant like this may be a bit awkward in growth habit. Keep fertilizing and watering moderately.
