My aunt dug up some growth that she has in flower beds for me. She said that in the spring, they produce purple flowers that close up at night.

They are now flowering, and no one knows what they are!! The flowers are 3-petaled, triangular shaped with bright yellow stamens loaded with pollen.

The greenery is silver -grey-green that looks like a type of long thick grass.

Any suggestions?

Thanks ............Linda

Based on your description I would guess it is a spiderwort or Tradescantia. Here is a photo of a purple flowered variety to compare yours with. You may need to cut and paste the complete url into your browser to make it work correctly.

I hope this helps.
