Hi, I just bought a Japanese Painted Fern on the June 4, 2006, it is still in the pot. I did not notice on the tag that it was Shade Loving, Sun Exposure- Partial to full shade. My question is, What will happen if I plant it almost full sun? I wanted to plant it near my Japanese Maple Tree to help accent it.

This fern needs a shady location or it will sun burn. A few hours of gentle morning sun or bright dappled light all day would be fine. Full sun all day or in the afternoon will be too bright. It will look dried out and brown and may die if you plant it in too much sun.

Sun also tends to dry the soil, another reason to keep it shaded. This plant needs soil that is organic and humusy, acidic, and evenly moist yet well drained. This means damp like a wrung out sponge, not sopping wet/saturated and never dried out. I hope this helps.
