While very few "English" flowers will thrive in alkaline soils, you can create an English Cottage Garden style using some of our well adapted plants. Below are some suggestions:

Achillea - Yarrow
Alcea rosea - Holly Hocks
Alyogyne huegelii - Blue Hibiscus
Buddleia davidii - Butterfly Bush
Centaurea cyanus - Cornflower
Clarkia amoena - Clarkia
Consolida ambigua - larkspur
Coreopsis
Cosmos
Echinacea purpurea - Purple coneflower
Helianthus annuus - Sunflower
Lathyrus odoratus - Sweet pea
Lavandula - Lavender
Linaria maroccana - Toadflax
Penstemon - Beard Tongue
Plumbago auriculata - Cape Plumbago
Roses
Rudbeckia - Black eyed Susan
Salvia clevelandii
Salvia greggii
Salvia leucantha
Tropaeolum majus - Nasturtium

Many of these make great cut flowers and attract butterflies.
Enjoy!
