|Will hazelnut trees thrive in Northern Utah? What type of soil and when should we plant them?|
|Yes, hazelnuts (Corydalis spp), also called, filberts, will grow in your area. They like a well-drained soil and a pH of 6-7. Light shade is beneficial, especially in harsh winter climates. In the spring, plant 2 or more different cultivars to promote good fruit set. Space the trees no closer than 15 feet apart. Every year remove the suckers from the bases of the trunks, and they should begin to bear nuts in the third or fourth year after planting.
Incidentally, hazelnut is the preferred name in the East, filbert is more commonly used in the West. A bit of folklore: filbert tree branches were the first wood used for divining rods for locating water.
