|I live on a really busy street and want to plant some shrubs to screen the house from the noise and the view. I have lousy soil (very little of it, actually - it's mostly rocks with a little clay thrown in), partial shade from the street trees and myneighbor's trees, and want something that is evergreen and blooming. What can you suggest?|
|For tough conditions like those, you need some really hardy plants. Oleander grows quickly with little care, and flowers faithfully every summer. Bamboo is another, almost weedy, plant that survives under poor conditions. It doesn't flower, but serves as an evergreen screen. Escallonia has lovely spring blossoms and year-round glossy green leaves.
You might also try looking at some mature hedges in your neighborhood to see what local plants you like that are growing under similar conditions.
Good luck with your project!
